Greek Orders
In Croatia, we are looking for Greek pillars. There are many Greek pillars in Croatia because Croatia was a Roman province between the years 168 BCE and 476 AD. Croatia was a single Roman province named Illyricum but later split into two provinces called Dalmatia and Pannonia. The Romans were very influenced by the Greeks' art and architectural style. Walking around Dubrovnik, we found a lot of Corinthian columns, some Doric columns and one Ionic column. The Dorians invaded Greece in 1100 BCE. The Doric order is the oldest of the three orders and was used mostly around 750-480 BCE. The Doric order is the simplest order. The Doric order (Doric column) is fat and strong with a simple cap and no base.
Then the Ionic order (Ionic column) came second, used in 400-500 BCE. It was named for the Ionian people who invaded Greece around 1050 BCE. It is more slender and has a papyrus scroll as a cap.
The Corinthian order (Corinthian column) was the latest Ancient Greek order, used in 427-323 BCE. It originated from the city of Corinth. It is the most complicated and has acanthus leaves on the cap.
